Google Cloud Services Face Outage in London, Revolut Services Down Too
Google said dozens of cloud products were affected, while Revolut reported service disruption and reassured customers that money and data remained safe.
- On Tuesday, Google Cloud confirmed a major outage in Europe affecting Western Europe, with multiple services including BigQuery Data TransferService, Cloud Run, and Google Kubernetes Engine experiencing elevated errors and network failures.
- The disruption stems from an issue within a local availability zone in London designed to protect against hardware failures, creating cascading effects for non-high-availability services and causing DNS connectivity problems.
- DownDetector reports widespread impacts for major customers including Lloyds Bank, HSBC, DPD, and Screwfix, while digital bank Revolut confirmed that customer money and data remain safe despite the disruption.
- Frustrated users vented on Twitter and Reddit, with one describing the "Major GCP incident affecting Europe regions" as a difficult start to the day, while Techies warned of cascading supplier impacts.
- This incident mirrors similar disruptions at Amazon Web Services and Cloudflare in recent years, illustrating centralized infrastructure risks; heavy reliance on few tech firms means a single outage disrupts vast internet swathes.
