Gold Hallmarking Fee Hiked by 67%: New BIS Charges for Gold and Silver Articles Explained

The revised rate applies to each gold article, while jewellers may absorb the increase or pass it into final prices, BIS said.

  • On September 14, 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards raised the gold hallmarking fee to ₹75 from ₹45 per article through the Amendment Regulations. The change takes effect immediately ahead of the festive season.
  • The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council expressed concern over the nearly 67 per cent increase in compliance costs. Chairman Rajesh Rokde urged the government to review the decision before burdening compliant jewellers further.
  • Under the amended Schedule, gold hallmarking requires a minimum charge of ₹200 per consignment, while silver remains fixed at ₹35 per article with a ₹150 minimum. A consignment is a batch sent to a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre.
  • GJC Vice Chairman Avinash Gupta warned that compliance must remain commercially sustainable; widening cost differentials between compliant and unauthorised channels harm all stakeholders. Vikram Subburaj noted the ₹30 increase is unlikely to materially alter most gold purchase bills.
  • Addressing fake hallmarking and unauthorised operations should take priority over increasing burdens on compliant jewellers, GJC representatives argue. Over 77 lakh silver jewellery items now carry Hallmark Unique Identification numbers, demonstrating the scale of purity assurance efforts.
