'God keep our land glorious and free'

Every Canada Day hundreds of people sing our national anthem, Oh Canada, which includes the following line: “God keep our land glorious and free!” When I say or hear these words, I wonder about their meaning. What does it mean to ask God, “Keep our land glorious and free?” For me, this phrase reminds me of that popular bumper sticker which proclaims, “Jesus saves.” Has anyone ever asked, “What exactly does he actually save us from?”
