GM unveils new 'groundbreaking' EV battery tech, aims to be first to market

  • General Motors revealed on Tuesday it developed a lithium-manganese-rich battery aimed at reducing costs for electric trucks by 2028.
  • GM began researching LMR battery technology about a decade ago to lower reliance on costly cobalt and nickel while maintaining long range.
  • The LMR prismatic cells consist of 60-70% manganese, 30-40% nickel, and almost no cobalt, allowing battery packs to be assembled using less than half the number of components compared to previous designs.
  • Vice President Kurt Kelty explained that using LMR technology enables GM to offer electric trucks with more than 400 miles of range while cutting battery pack expenses by over $6,000.
  • GM expects LMR batteries to lower EV prices, boost adoption, and will start commercial production through Ultium Cells by 2028.
