GLP-1 side effects: What 400,000 patient reports reveal
Researchers analyzed more than 400,000 Reddit posts and found menstrual changes, temperature complaints and fatigue were reported more often than in clinical trials.
- University of Pennsylvania researchers, including PhD student Neil Sehgal, used AI to analyze more than 400,000 Reddit posts from nearly 70,000 users, uncovering potential GLP-1 side effects often missed in clinical trials.
- Clinical trials often rely on homogeneous populations and standardized questionnaires that may fail to capture the full range of patient experiences, whereas social media analysis can aggregate informal reports at scale.
- Menstrual irregularities and temperature-related complaints like chills emerged as major underreported categories. "About 4% of users who describe side effects report menstrual irregularities," Sehgal noted.
- Fatigue ranked as the second most common complaint among real-world users, while the AI-assisted method successfully identified well-documented side effects like nausea, validating the researchers' approach.
- While these findings do not establish causation, they suggest reports warrant systematic study. Patients experiencing persistent or disruptive symptoms should consult their prescribing clinician before making treatment changes.
