GLP-1 drugs could reduce long-term sick leave: Study
The drugs were linked to savings of up to 1.5% of a worker’s salary as they cut illness-related absences over 30 days, researchers said.
A National Bureau of Economic Research study using Danish data found GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy, reduced long-term sick leave by 17 percent, saving workers up to 1.5 percent of their salary.
GLP-1 drugs work by suppressing appetite and increasing fullness, effectively managing weight but often reducing overall food intake, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies and muscle loss without structured nutrition plans.
A new consensus published in Obesity Pillars emphasizes that effective treatment requires approximately 1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram daily and approximately 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise weekly.
"Proper nutrition that suits the Indian body type is a must," said Dr V Mohan, Chairman of Dr Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, noting Asian Indians face higher muscle loss risks and require B12 monitoring.
Continued nutritional support after treatment discontinuation is essential for preventing weight regain and preserving metabolic benefits, as ongoing research suggests these medications could reduce risks of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.
