Israel Pushes for Return of All Hostage Bodies, Hamas Says Can't Find Them: ‘Need Special Machinery’
Hamas has returned the remains of nine captives amid ongoing disputes over aid and equipment access needed to recover 18 bodies still trapped under Gaza rubble, officials said.
- On Friday, the armed wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, handed over the remains of an additional captive to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which will send the body to Israel's Ministry of Health's National Center for Forensic Medicine for identification.
- Officials for Hamas contend recovery is limited due to rubble and destroyed tunnels in Gaza, saying Israel has blocked heavy machinery and Turkiye's 81 experts from entering.
- So far in the past days Hamas handed over remains of nine captives and a 10th body that Israel disputes, while Gaza's civil defence says more than 10,000 slain Palestinians remain trapped and only 280 have been retrieved.
- Political and security warnings intensified when Israel's government and military faced pressure to uphold the ceasefire by securing all deceased hostages totalling 28, while US President Donald Trump warned of renewed war.
- Despite the ceasefire agreed last week, Israel has not allowed large-scale aid entry and remains active in about half of the Gaza Strip, while Hamas urged mediators to open Rafah and support reconstruction amid limited heavy equipment destroyed during the war.
