Ghana: Mining Trial - High Court to Determine Wontumi's Fate Today
Judge Audrey Kocuvie-Tay said Wontumi and Akonta Mining illegally mined inside a forest reserve and could have faced up to 25 years.
- The High Court in Accra will deliver judgment today in the criminal trial of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party , Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, after counsel Samuel Atta Akyea filed a motion on July 16 seeking a postponement and Supreme Court referral.
- Antwi-Boasiako pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawfully assigning a mining concession in Samreboi, Western Region, and facilitating an unlicensed operation as a shareholder of Akonta Mining Limited.
- During the trial, the prosecution called four witnesses, including small-scale miner Henry Okum, who testified to a verbal mining agreement. The court previously established a prima facie case against the accused.
- Akyea argues Section 14 of the Minerals and Mining Act is unconstitutionally vague under Article 19 of the 1992 Constitution; if convicted, Antwi-Boasiako could face up to 25 years imprisonment.
- The Attorney-General charged company director Kwame Antwi alongside the chairman, though Antwi remains at large. Today's judgment will determine if the mining rights case proceeds.
