ICEYE and Rheinmetall Win Major Contract Worth Billions for Space Reconnaissance

- On Dec. 18 the German Ministry of Defence awarded a €1.7 billion contract to ICEYE and Rheinmetall, with the joint venture Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions securing the deal.
- As Germany accelerates military space investment after 2022, the MoD awarded a €1.7 billion contract following its September €35 billion space security package, emphasizing national control.
- The joint venture will own and operate SPOCK 1, a low Earth orbit constellation that supplies high volumes of SAR images, manages ground infrastructure, and uses AI‑driven image evaluation including data from ICEYE's existing constellation.
- Imagery from the constellation will protect the German Armed Forces' Lithuania Brigade and secure NATO's eastern flank, supporting Panzerbrigade 45, about 5,000 troops in Lithuania.
- Under the schedule, the contract runs from the end of 2025 to the end of 2030 with options to extend, with production starting in the third quarter of 2026 at a new Neuss, Germany facility.
