German Factory Orders Unexpectedly Rebound in May
Transport equipment and military orders drove the gain, but Destatis said the three-month trend still fell 0.2%.
German industrial orders rose 1.9% in May, surpassing a 1.5% Reuters forecast and rebounding from a revised 3.2% decline in April, Destatis reported on Monday.
An 85% month-on-month surge in the "other transport equipment" category—encompassing aircraft, ships, trains, and military vehicles—drove the headline growth, reflecting Germany's armed forces upgrade.
Foreign orders increased 2.2% in May, with demand from Europe rising 11.2% and domestic orders climbing 1.3%, while orders from outside Europe declined 3.2%.
Friedrich Merz announced reforms on Thursday to attract private capital and strengthen strategic industries, though Commerzbank economist Joerg Kraemer warned the package represents no "broad-based breakthrough."
German companies have recently benefited from Asian competitors facing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, though ING global head of macro Carsten Brzeski noted the Iran conflict still creates uncertainty.
