German brigade to be combat ready in Lithuania, on Russian border, in 2027
- Germany and Lithuania have signed a plan for the deployment of a Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania, with the core consisting of five battalions. Germany intends to deploy around 5,000 soldiers and civilians, starting in 2024 and completing by 2027.
- Discussions on this deployment began after Russia invaded Ukraine and Germany committed in June. The brigade's Forward Command Element is already deployed in Lithuania, and Germany has been leading an international NATO battalion in the country since 2017.
