The mayor of Budapest has ordered a staff freeze and general payment restrictions at the Budapest Municipality starting in September. The move was justified by ensuring smooth wage payments, which amount to more than three billion forints per month.
The Mayor's Office has confirmed that from September 1, new commitments can only be undertaken with the mayor's permission, and a staff freeze is in effect until revoked. Gergely Karácsony's decision is explained by the financial situation of the capital, as a loan of 110 billion forints would have to be repaid in the coming weeks, while the payment of salaries to the capital's employees is also relevant.
