Georgian National Charged for Conspiracy to Launder Proceeds of $1.3 Billion Health Care Fraud Scheme - FINCHANNEL
Prosecutors say the scheme used stolen identities and generated only $6.5 million in payments while moving fraud proceeds overseas.
On Friday, a federal grand jury in Boston indicted Georgian national Erekle Gugava for allegedly laundering $1.3 billion through a healthcare fraud scheme involving durable medical equipment.
Prosecutors allege Gugava operated Pennsylvania-based ND Medical Solutions, LLC for five months in 2025, using stolen identities of elderly and disabled Americans to bill Medicare and private insurers for equipment patients never received.
As part of the scheme, Gugava allegedly facilitated the deposit and transfer of fraud proceeds by opening bank accounts as sole signatory, then moving funds to overseas accounts benefiting the foreign-based criminal organization.
Charged with one count of money laundering conspiracy, Gugava faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison if convicted, while the Department of Justice has charged 324 defendants in the broader case.
The indictment follows the creation of the Benefit & Voter Fraud Team in Massachusetts on March 26, 2026, established to combat widespread fraud; officials encourage reporting suspected schemes by calling 1-855-SCAM-MA-1.
