Georgia shatters its Day 1 early voting record for a midterm

State officials said turnout was 40% higher than in 2022, as competitive Senate and governor races and GOP campaigning drove early voting.

  • On Tuesday, Georgia began early voting for the midterm election with more than 188,600 in-person ballots cast on the first day, breaking the midterm early voting record.
  • The first-day total represents a 40 percent increase from the 134,962 ballots cast in 2022, and exceeds the 70,849 voters recorded during the 2018 midterm's first day.
  • Officials have accepted 10,267 absentee ballots out of more than 130,000 issued, while voters now complete an additional check-in step requiring poll workers to handwrite names on numbered lists.
  • Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger attributed the turnout to voter confidence in election integrity, stating, "This record-breaking turnout proves that voters have confidence in the integrity of our elections."
  • Early voting continues through Oct. 30, with Election Day scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3. Voters can find polling locations through the Secretary of State's Voter Page.
