Georgia health departments extend hours for back-to-school immunizations

GEORGIA, JUL 16 – Georgia health departments are extending clinic hours to improve access for families and reduce wait times ahead of the school year, officials said.

  • During weekdays, Fulton County Board of Health offered immunizations from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to help families catch up before school, the department said.
  • As the school year approaches, the department said "All students entering school for the first time, transferring from out of state, or moving into the next required vaccine grade level must have up-to-date immunizations," and recommends early scheduling to avoid long wait times.
  • Karen Treece said exemption forms increased by about 1-2% this year, and she emphasized that vaccines are `very safe, very effective, and rigorously tested`.
  • Expanded clinic hours improve access for families, supporting community health, the DeKalb County Board of Health said.
  • The department strongly recommends HPV vaccination at age 11 or 12 and an annual influenza shot to guard against outbreaks.
