Lower Thames Crossing to Be ‘First Carbon Neutral British Infrastructure Project’
GeoPura's supply will replace over 12 million litres of diesel and cut about 30,000 tonnes of CO2 during the Lower Thames Crossing's main construction phase.
- GeoPura agreed to deliver 2,500 tonnes of green hydrogen for the Lower Thames Crossing, confirmed by National Highways.
- Aiming to be the first major UK carbon‑neutral construction project, the Lower Thames Crossing received March 2025 planning permission and uses hydrogen to reduce greenhouse gases and air quality impacts.
- Electrolysers and MEGCs are already onsite at HyMarnham Power, six hydrogen generators charge batteries in Essex, and GeoPura supplies hydrogen as a managed service during construction.
- The 2,500-tonne supply will replace more than 12 million litres of diesel and is estimated to save around 30,000 tonnes of CO2, while strengthening the British hydrogen supply chain and supporting Government job and economic growth estimates.
- GeoPura, founded in 2019, will scale electrolysis production using local renewables; the firm employs more than 170 people while project leaders expect contractors to adopt hydrogen-powered machinery and build new skills.
