Google's AI Agents Just Killed the Ender Dragon in Minecraft Without Any Help in What Is Believed to Be a World First
The agents split tasks, shared warnings and recovered items as Google researchers said the run took 27.23 hours.
- Google researchers revealed that four Gemini 4 Argon agents autonomously defeated Minecraft's "Ender Dragon" foe, marking the first end-to-end completion by AI agents without human intervention using the standard Mineflayer library.
- No roles or game-specific tools were assigned to the agents; instead, they coordinated via in-game chat and shared memory, with some building Enderman shelters while others gathered food and supplies.
- Over the 27-hour playthrough, "the four agents wrote and ran 2,783 programs, exchanged 229 messages and died 605 times along the way," the team said, demonstrating the complexity of maintaining coherent long-term planning.
- A fifth agent called "the Observer" monitored the session to ensure fairness. The run utilized 1.35 billion input tokens, costing $1,620 at standard pricing—roughly $15 per agent per hour.
- Researchers stated the goal was to study how agents coordinate in visible settings before real-world deployment. "The skills required to solve Minecraft such as coordinating a team, recovering from failure, and pursuing a goal for more than a day, are also what agents need to work reliably alongside people," they said.
