GE Vernova Bets $9 Billion on Transmission Lines
Cambridge-Based GE Vernova announced on Wednesday plans to acquire Trench Group from investment firm Triton Partners for $9 billion, marking the company's largest acquisition since spinning off from General Electric two-plus years ago.
Chief executive Scott Strazik aims to capitalize on massive data center buildouts and broader electrification shifts by strengthening GE Vernova's supply chain rather than expanding into entirely new business areas.
Trench brings around 3,000 employees and nearly a dozen factories, with annual revenue projected at $1.9 billion within two years. Analyst Christopher Dendrinos noted the high-voltage market is "experiencing a long-term, durable electricity investment super cycle."
Strazik said the deal will provide "greater visibility into production planning and improved ability to align this component supply with our customers' project schedules," while projecting $50 to $100 million in annual cost savings by 2030.
The acquisition follows an earlier $5-plus billion purchase of a stake in Prolec, bolstering GE Vernova's grid equipment dominance. The firm remains the most valuable public company in Massachusetts amid sustained global energy demand.
