Paralympics Great Sarah Storey Retires at 48 and Won't Chase a 10th Games in Los Angeles
The 48-year-old leaves as Britain’s most successful Paralympian with 19 golds and 39 world titles, saying she can have more impact off the bike.
On Thursday, Dame Sarah Storey announced her retirement from international competition, ending a 34-year Paralympic career and ruling out a bid for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.
Rather than physical limitations, Storey cited a desire to advocate for Para sport, believing she can have a "greater impact off my bike" pursuing new roles.
The most successful British Paralympian, Storey retires with 24 medals, including 19 golds across swimming and cycling, spanning nine Paralympic Games since 1992.
Lord Sebastian Coe, London 2012 organising committee leader, praised Storey's contributions while validating her concern that Para sport has "stalled somewhat since London 2012."
Storey describes Para sport as at a "critical stage," focusing on advocacy ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where Para events are now integrated into competition.
