Gavin Garcia rushes for 3 TDs to lead The Citadel past Charlotte 43-41 in 3OT
Gavin Garcia rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns as The Citadel won after a successful two-point conversion in the third overtime.
On Saturday, Sept. 5, The Citadel Bulldogs rallied to defeat UNC Charlotte 43-41 in triple overtime at Jerry Richardson Stadium before 13,724 fans, with running back Gavin Garcia rushing for a career-high 137 yards.
Following a 1-hour and 15-minute weather delay, the Bulldogs rebounded from last week's 42-14 loss to Wofford, with Coach Maurice Drayton emphasizing they played against "the man in the mirror."
Backup quarterback Nick Billoups added 38 yards and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs rushed for 268 yards combined, while Charlotte quarterback Cole Gonzales threw for 322 yards and receiver Jaylen Hampton caught eight passes for 117 yards and two scores.
A trick play reminiscent of the Philadelphia Phillies "Philly Special" secured the win, marking The Citadel's 10th victory over an FBS program since divisions split in 1978.
Looking ahead to Sept. 12, the Bulldogs will finally play in front of their home fans at Johnson Hagood Stadium, hosting crosstown rival Charleston Southern at 6 p.m.
