Hundreds Stranded on Northern Alberta Highway Overnight Due to Storm
RCMP said several tow trucks were sent to blocked vehicles as heavy snow left motorists stranded for more than 15 hours.
- A spring snowstorm brought Highway 63 and Highway 881 in Alberta to a standstill on Thursday and Friday, leaving nearly 300 vehicles stranded north of Edmonton.
- Rapid whiteout conditions and up to 60 centimetres of snow created impassable roads, forcing RCMP to shut down both highways as emergency responders struggled to reach motorists.
- Alberta RCMP Staff Sgt. Sabrina Clayton confirmed officers escorted tow trucks southbound to clear blockages, while Justin Young and Brian Power rescued 28 vehicles and delivered fuel and food.
- On Saturday, The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo deployed buses, food, and water to assist stranded travelers, with Mayor Sandy Bowman coordinating transport back to Fort McMurray.
- Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor noted the heavy snowfall will benefit the forest fire season as the weather system weakens and temperatures rebound to mid-teens by next week.
