Premier Announces Trades Funding for Okanagan College as NDP Caucus Gathers for Retreat in Kelowna
The province says the new seats will expand capacity in construction, clean energy and aerospace trades, with some opening as soon as September.
On Thursday, June 11, Premier David Eby announced Okanagan College is receiving 256 new skilled-trades training spaces during the provincial NDP caucus retreat in Kelowna, with some available by September.
This funding is part of a $241 million provincial investment creating 5,000 new skilled-trades seats across British Columbia, which Eby said aims to help young people build futures in the province.
Okanagan College President Dr. Neil Fassina called the expanded access a "game changer," noting the institution's skilled trades programs are in "high demand" across careers in construction, clean energy, and aerospace.
Vernon-Lumby MLA Harwinder Sandhu stated investments help all regions because communities are "inter-twined," emphasizing accessible training enables local families to build futures right here at home.
Additionally, OC and The BPL Legacy Association are developing a $22 million facility to expand Aircraft Maintenance Engineering capacity, growing from 64 to 144 students annually by 2028.
