NHS trial of blood test offers 'genuine hope' for people with some cancers
Grail said the test showed high specificity and positive predictive value, but the trial did not reduce stage III-IV cancers over 3 years.
- On Saturday, Grail presented Galleri trial results at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Chicago, confirming the blood test missed its primary endpoint of reducing late-stage cancer diagnoses.
- The NHS-Galleri trial enrolled 142,942 asymptomatic adults aged 50 to 77 and aimed for a statistically significant reduction in stage III-IV cancers over 3 years; this ambitious primary goal was not met.
- Despite missing the primary target, secondary findings showed 14% fewer cancers diagnosed at stage 4 and 19% more found at stages 1, 2 and 3, with 25% fewer patients diagnosed in emergency settings, Grail reported.
- Professor Richard Houlston of the Institute of Cancer Research, London, argued researchers presented findings "far more positively than the overall results justify," while concerns persist about strain on the NHS 80% Faster Diagnosis Standard.
- The upcoming Reach study, which will trial Galleri on about 50,000 US patients, will provide critical information to weigh the benefits and risks of early detection blood tests, according to experts.
