Gael Monfils apparently retires before planned
Monfils pulled out of a farewell exhibition and is listed as inactive by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, with no return date confirmed.
- On Wednesday, Gael Monfils apparently retired from professional tennis ahead of schedule, withdrawing from the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes exhibition in Lyon. The 40-year-old Frenchman has not confirmed the decision.
- Monfils appeared as "inactive" on the International Tennis Integrity Agency list as of Oct. 5. His second-round loss to Learner Tien at the 2026 U.S. Open now appears to be his final professional match before transitioning to wealth management with a Swiss company.
- The Frenchman won 13 ATP Tour titles and reached Grand Slam semifinals at the French Open in 2008 and the U.S. Open in 2016. Monfils was known for acrobatic moves and deft net play throughout his career.
- Monfils withdrew from an exhibition match featuring countrymen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon, and Richard Gasquet due to personal reasons. He had previously received a wild-card entry for the ATP Masters event in Paris in early November.
- Returning to competition would require six months of drug testing, similar to Serena Williams' comeback path. Monfils is married to Ukrainian tennis standout Elina Svitolina, and the couple has a daughter, Skai, who turns 4 on Thursday.

DECRYPTAGE - To the general surprise, the Frenchman left the circuit prematurely. With a less impressive record than his out-of-standard popularity with players and the public.
French tennis star Gael Monfils has probably packed his racket for good.
Gaël Monfils is no longer a professional tennis player. The most spectacular French player of the last twenty years is recorded on the list of retired players, to the general surprise since it was expected that he was still fighting tournaments in Lyon and Paris. An unpredictable end, as the Frenchman has been throughout his career. At the Moselle Open in Metz, he was often well inspired (a victory in 2009, a final in 2005, a semi-final in 2012)…
Gaël Monfils is officially retired. The 40-year-old French ex-tennisman will be able to project himself towards a second life, which will see him join Geneva finance. Before him, other French athletes have undergone an amazing conversion.
