Local Residents Remove Greenpeace Climate Mural From Scorched Welsh Hillside
Residents say the scheme would narrow the road and remove bus laybys, while an independent survey found 90% opposed or concerned.
Around 80 residents gathered yesterday at Seaton Sluice Community Centre to oppose the A193 Seafront Active Travel Scheme, citing concerns over proposed road narrowing and safety risks to the village.
Local frustration stems from perceived poor consultation: 82% of survey respondents were unaware of the 2025 consultation, while 86% felt there had been "insufficient opportunity" to influence the scheme.
Resident Ian Truby called the changes a "nightmare," questioning why £14 million would be spent altering "something that's not broken," while Roy White warned narrowing would make reversing onto driveways "very difficult."
Northumberland County Council updated designs to reinstate bus lay-bys following feedback from six in-person events and an online survey. Deputy Leader Cllr Richard Wearmouth said the design was not final and the council was listening.
The council has delivered information about upcoming public events to approximately 1,700 properties, maintaining commitment to balance local feedback with the project's goal of linking Blyth and North Tyneside.
