From the trenches to the track, Ukraine’s amputee athletes join international endurance race
The veterans competed in the disabled category and said the race offered recovery, distraction from war and a message of resilience.
This month, Dmytro Bykhovchenko and fellow Ukrainian war veterans completed a grueling international fitness race in Valencia, Spain, marking a significant milestone in their physical and mental recovery.
Bykhovchenko lost both legs three years ago during the Battle in Avdiivka after a Russian drone strike delayed his evacuation, eventually leading him to pursue endurance sports.
Known as HYROX, the competition combines eight 1-kilometer runs with eight punishing workouts, including sled pushes and rowing, which amputee athletes navigated through the course.
"Sport just makes my days easier," Bykhovchenko told The Associated Press, explaining that intense training provides a vital mental escape from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Ukrainian athlete Oleh Tserkovnyy noted their participation carries a broader message about a country still fighting after more than 4 1/2 years of war, aiming to inspire the world.
Former Ukrainian soldiers forget war, taking refuge in sport. Although they have chosen amputees after the wounds suffered on the battlefield, they continue their lives participating in an important sporting competition.
