From e-bike bans to DV, 'people are the most important thing' for this new top cop
He said 62 people have died on Southern Region roads this year as police target speed, drugs and alcohol, along with domestic violence.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty has taken command of the Southern Region, identifying officer safety, domestic violence, and road trauma as his three primary operational priorities.
Hegarty emphasized officer safety as paramount, speaking before the funeral of Constable Mia Lay, who died on September 25 while responding to a stolen car report in Redfern.
Addressing soaring domestic violence rates in the Illawarra, Hegarty pledged a leadership role in enforcement, believing "20 per cent of the people commit 80 per cent of the crime."
Targeting speed, drugs, and alcohol, Hegarty plans to reduce road trauma, noting that 60 per cent of the 62 fatalities on Southern Region roads this year relate to these factors.
Prioritizing e-bike safety in the Illawarra following recent crashes, Hegarty warned that non-compliant devices will be confiscated, noting it will be "a rude shock to people when they lose a $6000 push bike.
