From Childhood Drawings to McDonald's Cups: Artist Takes Chicano Art to National Brands
The limited-edition cup extends her growing national profile after collaborations with the Sacramento Kings, San Francisco Giants and Modelo.
Sacramento artist Cecelia Perez designed a limited-edition McDonald's cup for Hispanic Heritage Month, a collaboration that originated from a mural she created at a McDonald's on Pacific Avenue in Stockton.
Perez's parents introduced her to the Royal Chicano Air Force, a Sacramento-based collective established in the 1970s that used art as activism, inspiring her career in Chicano cultural imagery.
Her work spans the Sacramento Kings, San Francisco Giants, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C., while her 'Hey Ruca' brand is sold in national retailers including Zumiez.
McDonald's featured Perez in a commercial promoting the cup collaboration; she also appears in a Modelo campaign and serves as a Ford ambassador while producing her first hard copy magazine.
Despite her growing national collaborations, Perez said Sacramento remains a major source of inspiration as she maintains her daily drawing practice from the Bay Area.
