The Mac Pro Is Dead at Apple, and I’ll Miss the Cheese-Grater Powerhouse
Apple will cease production of the Mac Pro desktop line in 2026 after two decades, marking an end to its high-end modular workstation offerings.
Apple officially discontinued the Mac Pro this week, removing it from its website and confirming no future versions are planned. The buy page now redirects to Apple's Mac homepage.
The Mac Pro's troubled history began with the 2013 'trash can' design that suffered from thermal constraints and poor upgradeability; the 2019 modular redesign with eight PCIe slots came too late as Apple Silicon's 2023 arrival and Mac Studio's rise sealed its fate.
At $6,999 starting price, the Mac Pro never achieved mainstream adoption. Apple also discontinued the $700 Mac Pro Wheels Kit, which launched in 2020 as a $400 upgrade option.
Mac Studio now serves as Apple's high-end professional desktop, offering nearly all Mac Pro capabilities except PCIe expansion slots. Currently powered by M3 Ultra, it will receive M5 Ultra configurations later this year.
Apple's strengthened Mac lineup—featuring MacBook Air, MacBook Pros, 24-inch iMac, and Mac mini—provides professional users clearer options across every budget. The Mac Pro's discontinuation simplifies the company's desktop strategy without compromising capability.
