Korpatsch Defends Handshake Snub After Tense Win over Wang
Korpatsch said she refused the handshake after a disputed line call and a code violation, insisting she was not cheating.
On Wednesday, Germany's Tamara Korpatsch defeated 32nd seed Wang Xinyu at the French Open, skipping the customary post-match handshake after their tense second-round clash on Court Seven.
Tensions flared when Wang disputed a ball mark late in the opening set, crossing the net to inspect it. Chair umpire Aurelie Tourte issued a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, escalating friction that persisted through the match.
Citing Hawk-Eye data, Korpatsch stated the ball was eight millimetres out and explained both old and new marks were outside the baseline. "I don't know how to cheat, honestly," she said, adding it would be embarrassing to do so.
Regarding the handshake snub, Korpatsch stated, "I didn't offer her my hand because that's not fair for me." She expressed surprise at the situation despite their previously good relationship, maintaining she is not an unfair player.
Unlike other Grand Slams, the French Open relies on manual clay inspections rather than Electronic Line Calling, giving officials ability to verify ball traces. Korpatsch advances to the third round to face seventh seed Elina Svitolina.
