Free fishing weekend in Minnesota, North Dakota aims to hook young anglers
Minnesota and North Dakota are waiving fishing license requirements this weekend to introduce new anglers and families to the sport.
North Dakota and Minnesota are hosting free fishing opportunities this weekend, allowing residents to fish without licenses; North Dakota's event runs June 6-7, while Minnesota's Take a Kid Fishing weekend spans June 5-7.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources paused license sales to transition to a new electronic system, allowing anglers to fish without a license through June 8 until the platform opens June 9.
According to North Dakota Game and Fish Department marketing coordinator Cayla Bendel, the weekend is a 'great opportunity to try fishing for the first time,' with residents 16 and older able to fish any state water without a license.
Benjamin Kohn, volunteer mentor program coordinator with the Minnesota Department, suggests showing kids a 'basic setup' to 'cast from a pier and chase sunnies,' creating memorable experiences that foster lifelong fishing activities.
Warm temperatures should improve lake fishing, as Bendel noted June is a 'good time primarily for walleyes,' and anglers may find success with 'less sought-after species like crappie and largemouth bass' at Devils Lake.
