Francisco Franco Bahamonde was born in Ferrol on 4 December 1892, son of Nicolás Franco y Salgado-Araújo, officer in charge of the Navy, and María del Pilar Bahamonde y Pardo de Andrade. He entered the Toledo Infantry Academy in 1907, graduated in 1910 and two years later was already in Morocco. He ascended to Brigadier General in 1926, aged thirty-three.
