Many French people suffer from temperatures beyond the 40-degree mark. Meteorologists now warn almost nationwide of the heat. Authorities therefore prohibit events on the "fresh" air and limit when work can be done on construction sites.
On Monday, the temperature was 42.8 degrees in Villariès (Haute-Garonne). This is the record for this day, but several cities have broken their own record. The exceptional heat wave that runs through the territory is intensifying this Monday, August 11. Temperatures have reached record levels in the southwest, notably in Gironde and the Landes, where 42.5 degrees have been recorded. Red vigilance continues until Tuesday.
Vigilance remains highest in the 12 departments of the South-West placed in red alert. On Tuesday, the latter will extend to four departments of the Lyon region. The phenomenon is expected to last "at least" until the weekend of 15 August.
The thermometer will climb this Monday with temperatures "of an exceptional level" in the south-west of the country. Temperatures above 40°C have been raised locally and record levels could be reached in places.
