France Protests: Up to 500 Schools Closed Due to Security Concerns
Education officials said closures are a precaution as protests over teacher shortages, overcrowding and crumbling buildings spread to more than 1,200 schools.
On Monday, Education Minister Édouard Geffray ordered 400 to 500 French high schools to suspend lessons totally or partly, citing that security conditions "have not been fulfilled" after three weeks of student blockades.
Since September 17, students have protested overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and dilapidated buildings, escalating demands for improved school conditions nationwide.
Authorities reported more than 5,000 arrests and 78 education staff injuries during the unrest, with 24 schools "burned or ransacked" since the movement began.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu vowed not to "yield an inch to violence" and pledged to advance a "casseur-payer" bill making individuals liable for public property damage.
Protest organizers scheduled continued demonstrations for Tuesday, while teaching unions called a national education strike for October 6, demanding concrete government measures to address student grievances.
In more than 400 schools in France there are protests again. Blockages and violence lead to school failure and high material damage. The Prime Minister wants to respond to the concerns of young people.
Demonstrations are taking place at more than four hundred French educational institutions on Monday, the French Ministry of Education reports. Additionally, four to five hundred locations are fully or partially closed due to the unrest.
