Junior School Pupil Treated for Meningitis in Fourth Reading Case
Health officials said the pupil is recovering well as antibiotics were offered to contacts and all four local cases were confirmed as meningitis B.
On Monday, May 18, a Year 4 pupil at Westwood Farm Junior School in Tilehurst received a diagnosis of "confirmed case of meningococcal disease" and is recovering well, school officials confirmed.
This marks the fourth confirmed meningitis B case in Reading, with all patients connected to the same wider social network following Henley College student Lewis Waters' death last week.
The UK Health Security Agency confirmed Friday that this strain differs from the Kent outbreak meningitis B, stressing the risk to the wider public remains low.
Two other affected students attend Reading Blue Coat School and Highdown Secondary School and Sixth Form Centre, where they are receiving treatment as part of the outbreak response.
David Munday, Buckinghamshire Council's Director of Public Health, stresses "early treatment is vital" and urges parents to monitor for high fever, stiff neck, and vomiting.
