Fourth, fifth graders learn to fly airplanes as part of Michigan after-school program
Fourth- and fifth-grade students practice ground operations and in-flight procedures before taking their first flights, building communication and navigation skills.
Students at Coit Creative Arts Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan, are learning to fly airplanes through an immersive after-school program partnered with West Michigan Flight Academy.
Under the guidance of West Michigan Flight Academy instructor Keith Rickle, a former airline pilot, students spent months mastering ground operations and in-flight procedures through classroom games.
Participant Charlie noted the class helped him overcome a fear of heights, while Kaiyah described her first plane ride as "scary, but also like really, really exciting."
Rickle emphasizes the program fosters skills beyond aviation, stating, "Even if it's not an aviation career, they find that, oh, there's things out there that I can do that I absolutely love to do."
The ultimate goal is teaching students that "picking a career is a wonderful thing that will help set me up for the rest of my life," Rickle said, positioning the program as career preparation.
