Four People in Court over Golders Green Jewish Ambulance Arson

Prosecutors say the blaze caused about £1 million in damage and damaged nearby flats and a synagogue.

  • On Friday, four young men appeared at the Old Bailey in London facing arson charges for destroying ambulances operated by the Jewish charity Hatzola. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb remanded them in custody until trial begins January 27, 2027.
  • In the early hours of March 23, three attackers allegedly ignited fully stocked vehicles in Golders Green while a fourth waited in a blue Toyota Avensis. The resulting blaze caused gas canisters to explode, inflicting around £1 million of damage.
  • Hamza Iqbal, 20, Rehan Khan, 19, Judex Atshatshi, 18, and an unnamed 17-year-old face charges of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered. Prosecutors believe the incident was a targeted attack against the Jewish community, requiring evacuation of nearby homes.
  • Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident as a "deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack." London police arrested 25 people over similar attacks and are investigating whether those involved were paid proxies linked to Iran-backed plots.
  • The defendants confirmed their names and ages at the preliminary hearing and remain in custody. A plea hearing is scheduled for August 28, with a provisional four-week trial set to follow at the Old Bailey next year.
