Former US Open finalist Kei Nishikori to conclude his career at the Japan Open
The 36-year-old former U.S. Open finalist will end his career at home after injuries limited him to the Challenger tour this year.
The ATP Tour confirmed Tuesday that 36-year-old Kei Nishikori received a wild card invitation for the Japan Open, where he will conclude his professional career at home in Tokyo.
Nishikori, the first Japanese man to reach a Grand Slam final at the 2014 Open, also won a bronze medal at the 2016 Janeiro Olympics in Rio by defeating Rafael Nadal.
After struggling with injuries, Nishikori has competed exclusively on the Challenger tour this year as he approaches retirement from professional tennis.
Former coach Michael Chang said Nishikori's accomplishments are magnified by competing alongside the Big Three and Big Four, while four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka called his career path "so inspiring."
Scheduled for Sept 30 to Oct 6, the Japan Open in Tokyo provides a final competitive platform for Nishikori to receive a proper home send-off before retirement.
