Crews fight apartment building blaze in downtown Victoria
Crews withdrew after intense heat forced a defensive response, and three families are receiving assistance as investigators examine the cause.
On Oct. 24, 2026, a massive fire broke out at the former Travellers Inn on Queens Avenue in Victoria, with Victoria Fire Department crews responding after multiple 911 calls shortly after 4 a.m.
Deputy Fire Chief Ajay LeBlanc reported crews faced "extremely challenging conditions" as the blaze spread rapidly, prompting Victoria Fire Chief Dan Atkinson to order a "defensive posture."
Of the building's 85 suites, the property was largely vacant, and three families are receiving Emergency Support Services while firefighters from Saanich, Esquimalt, and the Oak Bay Fire Department assisted in the response.
The City initiated a "controlled demolition" of the fire-damaged structure after parts collapsed, and Blanshard Street remains closed between Princess Avenue and Pembroke Street to allow emergency crews to work.
Crews are expected to remain on scene through the night as the cause remains under investigation, and Deputy Fire Chief LeBlanc noted the department had responded to a previous fire at the property.
