Former student sues Kent School District over sex abuse case
The suit says the district failed to stop years of sexual harassment and abuse, and seeks damages for trauma, medical costs and other losses.
A former Kentwood High student filed a civil lawsuit against the Kent School District in King County Superior Court on June 29, alleging district officials failed to protect her from sexual harassment and grooming by former science teacher Timothy Brennan.
According to the lawsuit, Brennan used Snapchat under the username "Seanbee4" to contact the student during her freshman year from September 2015 through June 2016, sending explicit messages and pornographic images of himself despite her requests for him to stop.
Attorney Loren Cochran of Tacoma-based Cochran Douglas said the lawsuit's timing relates to the victim's son nearing school age, which caused her to connect the district's failure to supervise Brennan to the harm she suffered.
The Kent School District has 20 days to respond to the lawsuit, though officials issued a statement June 30 declining comment on the pending legal matter. A trial date of July 5, 2027 has been assigned by the court.
Brennan previously pleaded guilty to communication with a minor, serving 50-plus days in King County jail as part of a 364-day suspended sentence and required to register as a sex offender. Washington law mandates districts take reasonable steps to protect students from such harm.
