Former Senator Pamela Wallin Says MAID Committee Was ‘Chaotic and Exclusionary’
Wallin said a leaked June report made the committee process chaotic and exclusionary, as the government moved to bar MAID for mental illness alone.
On Tuesday, former Senator Pamela Wallin testified regarding a leaked confidential Medical Assistance in Dying committee report, calling the process "chaotic and exclusionary" while criticizing committee leadership.
In June, media reports disclosed the committee's recommendation to "indefinitely" pause MAID expansion for mental illness before the report was finalized, prompting Wallin to raise privilege concerns with the Speaker of the Senate.
Wallin described co-chair Liberal MP Marcus Powlowski as "dismissive" and characterized the committee's process as "highly irregular and flawed," noting two-thirds of invited witnesses opposed MAID expansion.
Powlowski, who did not attend Tuesday's rules committee meeting, denied being the source of any leak and called the inquiry a "brazen attempt" by certain senators to undermine democracy.
The rules, procedures and rights of parliament committee is investigating the leak, with Chair Senator Peter Harder suggesting discussions will resume to trace the source or craft recommendations for future joint committees.
