Gardner Minshew Selected as Cardinals' Starting QB; Jacoby Brissett Demoted to 3rd String
Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur named Gardner Minshew the team's starting quarterback on Monday, promoting rookie Carson Beck to backup and demoting Jacoby Brissett to emergency third string.
During Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, Minshew replaced Brissett in the third quarter and threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns, sparking a 33-30 overtime victory.
Brissett completed only 10-of-23 passes for 119 yards with an interception before benching, while Minshew, signed to a $5.75 million contract in March, provided the spark.
Promoting Beck to the backup role accelerates the rookie's development through additional scout team repetitions, which LaFleur described as "the right thing to do."
With the November 10 trade deadline approaching, Brissett has become a potential target for teams needing depth; LaFleur remained noncommittal on his future with the club.
