Former federal renewables lab lays off 134 people
The National Laboratory of the Rockies cut 134 jobs amid funding constraints and policy shifts favoring fossil fuels, following a previous layoff of 114 staff in May 2025.
On Monday, the National Laboratory of the Rockies eliminated 134 positions spanning both research and operations, lab spokesperson David Glickson said.
Funding constraints and programmatic shifts prompted cuts, a termination letter reviewed by CPR News and lab spokesperson David Glickson said, citing alignment with Department of Energy priorities.
The lab's footprint spans a 327-acre Golden, Colorado campus, offices in Washington, D.C. and California, an Alaska research site, and the National Wind Technology Center along Colorado 128 in Boulder County.
The lab responded by acknowledging the contributions of impacted staff, and U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen condemned the cuts, calling them harmful.
Weeks after removing 'renewable' from its name, the renaming to National Laboratory of the Rockies coincides with Trump administration budget proposals and DOE funding shifts targeting renewable programs.
