Former China Eastern Boss Charged with Bribery
Authorities say Liu Shaoyong accepted more than 134 million yuan in bribes and abused multiple posts to secure benefits for others.
- On Friday, China's top prosecutor indicted Liu Shaoyong, former chairman of China Eastern Airlines Group, on bribery charges, alleging he accepted over $20 million in illegal funds.
- Liu was expelled from the Communist Party in January for "serious violations of Party discipline and laws," Xinhua reported, after a year-long graft investigation preceded the formal charges.
- President Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign targets both "tigers and flies," with recent convictions of former defense officials Wei Fenghe and Shangfu sentenced to death with two-year reprieve.
- Liu chaired China Eastern when one of its planes plunged into a mountainside in March 2022, killing 132 people; however, Xinhua's report did not mention recent United States NTSB findings of a cockpit struggle.
- The Supreme People's Procuratorate issued the arrest decision; Reuters was unable to reach Liu for comment regarding allegations he abused official posts to secure benefits and accept bribes.
