Senate GOP Appoints Special Counsel in Hobbs Pay-to-Play Investigation
Senate Republicans say they will seek testimony and records after a two-year review found no evidence to support a pay-for-play scheme.
On Monday, Arizona Senate Republicans appointed former Supreme Court Justice Andrew Gould as special counsel to investigate Governor Katie Hobbs, transferring the probe from the Senate Government Committee to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
Republican Sen. Jake Hoffman launched the investigation last week after Attorney General Kris Mayes cleared Hobbs of wrongdoing, with the transfer aimed at addressing scrutiny over Hoffman's consulting work for Rep. Andy Biggs.
Sunshine Residential Homes allegedly received 30% to 56% rate increases after donating more than $500,000 to Democratic funds, though The Attorney General reviewed more than 100,000 pages of records without finding evidence of a pay-to-play scheme.
Senate Democrats cited their Friday letter to Senate President Petersen questioning the probe, while Hoffman stated the appointment "takes away their excuses for non-cooperation" and ensures evidence drives any reforms.
The committee will conduct a disciplined review of evidence, seeking testimony and records related to the half million dollars in political contributions before publishing findings and legislative reform recommendations.
