Foreign Office issues advice for 5 European countries amid increased wildfire risk
More than 300,000 people have evacuated homes since mid-July as prolonged hot weather drives fires across Europe, officials and EuroNews said.
- The Foreign Office has issued travel advice for people heading to France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece as wildfires intensify across the region in the coming weeks.
- With around 1,200 fires already reported in 2026, the European Union could be heading for its worst wildfire season on record, more than double the annual average of 569, according to EuroNews.
- Since mid-July, wildfires have torn through France, Spain, and Portugal, forcing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes; the Gironde region near Bordeaux saw 162 square miles burned in less than four days.
- The Foreign Office said: "If you are caught in, or witness, a wildfire, call the emergency services on 18 or 112 ." Travelers should follow local authorities' instructions.
- In Greece and Italy, visitors should monitor local alerts and weather forecasts; the Foreign Office added: "Contact your airline or travel operator who can assist you with return travel to the UK.
