‘Force of nature’ ex-Liberal VP dies
The former Liberal vice president was remembered as a divisive conservative figure after defecting to One Nation and appearing regularly on Sky News.
Former Liberal Party vice president Teena McQueen died on Wednesday after a short illness, drawing tributes for her legacy as a "force of nature" in Australian politics.
McQueen served as Liberal Party vice president from 2017 to 2023 before defecting to One Nation in May, telling Sky News remaining in the party felt like "bashing my head against a wall."
Mining magnate Gina Rinehart described her as an "exceptional" woman who "cared deeply" about Australia and its future. Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott called her a "fiercely loyal friend" and "fine servant."
One Nation leader Pauline Hanson paid tribute Wednesday night, describing McQueen as a "woman full of life" whose support was "valued and cherished," promising to "continue the fight she was about to join."
Her political career included controversy; in 2022 she declared it was good "lefties" had left the Liberal Party, and she reportedly joked in 2021 she would "kill to be sexually harassed.
