Toronto Company’s AI Device Spots Residual Breast Cancer During Surgery

Toronto-Based Perimeter Medical Imaging AI received FDA approval for Claire, an AI-powered device designed to detect residual cancer during breast surgery.
Approximately 15 to 20 per cent of lumpectomies require repeat surgery because microscopic cancer cells evade surgical detection, forcing patients into additional procedures and emotional uncertainty.
A clinical trial of 206 patients found Claire identified residual cancer with 88.1 per cent accuracy, using optical coherence tomography for imaging 10 times clearer than an X-ray.
FDA approval allows Perimeter Medical to begin selling Claire to U.S. hospitals immediately; two facilities are already testing the technology.
Perimeter is developing additional applications of the technology for other cancer forms while preparing to seek Health Canada approval for domestic use.
