Florida Unveils State-Designed US History Course as AP Alternative
The state says the course will give students another path to college credit and expand advanced coursework while avoiding ideological bias, officials said.
On Monday, the Florida Department of Education released the framework for the Florida Advanced Courses and Tests U.S. History course, a state-developed alternative to Advanced Placement classes.
Governor Ron DeSantis signed 2023 legislation establishing FACT courses to provide alternatives to AP classes, which state officials claim 'consistently embed Critical Race Theory and DEI' in their materials.
Interested districts and charter schools must register for the pilot program by May 18, allowing students to earn college credit at state institutions upon passing corresponding assessments.
Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas described the framework as 'grounded in the full scope of our nation's history,' though critics warn the curriculum frames Florida as always having been anti-slavery.
Expanding on the previously piloted College Algebra course tested at 32 traditional and charter schools, officials aim to grow state-based acceleration options, though out-of-state credit acceptance remains uncertain.
