Florentino Pérez Faces First Election for Real Madrid Leadership in 20 Years
Enrique Riquelme is mounting a credible challenge as Florentino Pérez seeks another term, with both camps promising major signings to win 98,000 members.
- On Sunday, Real Madrid will hold its first contested presidential election in 20 years, with incumbent Florentino Pérez facing challenger Enrique Riquelme. The club's 98,000 members will vote between the two candidates.
- Pérez ran unchallenged in 2009, 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025, but Riquelme argues statute changes made in 2012 restricted member candidacies. He called for democracy to replace what he termed "a complete lack of democracy."
- While Riquelme pledged to sign Manchester City star Erling Haaland, the club dismissed the possibility. Pérez countered by promising to bring back coach José Mourinho if re-elected for another four years.
- Backing for Riquelme includes former Madrid greats Raúl, Iker Casillas, and Fernando Hierro, who would assume new roles. Pérez promised to announce a "most expensive transfer in the history of Real Madrid" worth at least $173 million next week.
- The ownership model itself is at stake: Riquelme opposes Pérez's previous proposal to sell 10% of the club to private investors, which would break with 124 years of member ownership tradition.
